Emotional Balance: Tips for Harmonizing Mind and Body
Emotions. We all have them, and let's be real—they can be incredibly challenging to navigate. Whether you're someone who keeps your emotions tightly under wraps or someone who wears their heart on their sleeve, finding balance can feel like an uphill battle. But here's the good news: you're not alone in this struggle.
At Breakthrough and Bloom, I’ve seen it all—from clients who shy away from their emotions entirely to those who are so deeply immersed in them that it feels like they’re losing control. And if you find yourself on either end of this emotional spectrum, I want you to know that there is absolutely nothing wrong with you. I’ve been there too. I spent years swinging between emotional extremes—months of emptiness followed by waves of uncontrollable feelings that left me questioning everything.
But there’s a way to find peace between these two extremes, a way to live a life that’s vibrant without letting emotions dictate your every move.
Where Do You Fall on the Emotional Spectrum?
Take a moment to ask yourself: Where do you fall on this spectrum? Do you feel like you generally have things under control, but certain situations cause you to snap? Or do you retreat into your inner world when emotions start to rise? There’s no judgment here—just curiosity. The key to change is awareness, and you can’t fix what you’re not aware of.
Think of it like this: You wouldn’t know you need a new roof unless you noticed a leak. Similarly, you won’t recognize an emotional imbalance unless you take a good, honest look at yourself.
The Roommate Analogy: A Game-Changer for Emotional Management
One of the most transformative concepts I’ve shared with my clients is something I call the "roommate analogy." Imagine that you own a beautiful home—this home is your body. And in this home, you have roommates—your thoughts and emotions. These roommates have been with you since you bought the house, and while they sometimes get along, other times they can create absolute chaos.
As the homeowner, you’re responsible for maintaining the house, but it’s much easier to do when your roommates aren’t wreaking havoc. The good news is that you have the final say in what happens within your home. You decide how your emotions and thoughts contribute to the household, how they can help rather than hinder your life.
This analogy illustrates a crucial truth: You are not your emotions. You are the observer of your emotions, the one who decides how they influence your life. Emotions are not in charge—you are.
Emotions as Teachers, Not Dictators
Think of your emotions as messages from your subconscious mind, like little signals popping up to show you areas that need healing. Maybe you're feeling anxious about an upcoming conversation. Instead of letting that anxiety take over, ask yourself: What fear is at play here? What story am I telling myself that’s causing this reaction? By addressing the root cause, you’re taking back control.
Emotions are here to guide us, not to rule us. They’re like toddlers—they crave attention, connection, and direction. They want an example to follow, and that example is you.
You Are Not Your Emotions
Here’s the bottom line: Emotions are happening within you, but they are not you. You’re not anxious; you’re experiencing anxiety. You’re not depressed; you’re experiencing depression. This shift in perspective allows you to see emotions for what they really are—temporary states that can be managed and understood.
Next time you feel an overwhelming emotion, remember this: You have the power to set boundaries, provide clear expectations, and create harmony within your home—your body. When you find this balance, life starts to unfold in beautiful ways. You’ll gain clarity, focus, and the freedom to pursue your life’s purpose with renewed energy.
